How to Set Up APN on a 4G Pet GPS Tracker (and Fix Offline Problems)

Your pet GPS tracker is charged, the SIM card is installed, and you've opened the tracking app. But instead of seeing a new location, the screen says Device Offline.

You take the SIM out and test it in your phone. Mobile data works. You put it back in the tracker, send an APN command, and receive a reply saying the settings were saved.

Still offline.

What should you do next?

The answer isn't always to send another command. An offline 4G pet tracker may have a SIM, APN, network compatibility, cellular data, or platform connection problem—and those issues need different fixes.

In this guide, we'll explain how to set up APN on a 4G pet GPS tracker, check whether the device has a working data connection, and troubleshoot problems that remain after configuration.

We'll also explain why commands vary between tracker models, using VerdantTrace VT01 and a separate documented SMS protocol as examples.

Important: Always identify your exact tracker model and firmware before sending SMS configuration commands. A command that works on one 4G tracker may not work on another, even if both devices use the same tracking app.

Start by identifying which connection stage is failing before sending another command.

1. What Is an APN, and Why Does a Pet Tracker Need It?

APN stands for Access Point Name.

It's a setting that tells a cellular device which data-network access point to use with its SIM provider.

A conventional 4G GPS tracker performs two related but separate jobs.

First, it determines a position using supported technologies such as GPS and other satellite navigation systems. Some models also use Wi-Fi or cellular network information to estimate a position.

Second, it sends that information through a mobile data connection to a server, where the tracking app can display it.

APN settings belong to the communication side—not the satellite-positioning side.

If your APN is incorrect, the tracker might obtain a position but be unable to upload it. The app may then show Offline or display an older location.

Does every 4G pet tracker need manual APN setup?

No.

Some devices automatically configure a supported carrier's APN. Others require manual configuration through SMS, an app, or a service tool.

Trackers with built-in or managed cellular connectivity generally come with a prepared network configuration and may not require owners to enter a local APN.

For example, VerdantTrace VT01 uses a compatible user-provided SIM, while some other devices use managed connectivity.

If you're unsure which connection style your device uses, check our SIM Card for a 4G Pet Tracker Guide before changing settings.

2. Before You Start: Check Your SIM, PIN, SMS and Network Compatibility

Close-up of hands holding a SIM card beside a smartphone during mobile data setup.
Check that the SIM is active and mobile data works before configuring the tracker.

Before sending an APN command, make sure your SIM and tracker can actually communicate over the intended mobile network.

Test the SIM's mobile data

If your tracker uses a removable SIM, install it in a compatible smartphone and turn Wi-Fi off.

Open a website using cellular data.

If it doesn't load, check the account before troubleshooting the tracker.

Confirm that:

  • The SIM is activated.
  • Your data plan is active and has sufficient allowance or balance.
  • The carrier permits the SIM to be used in a GPS tracking device.
  • Roaming is available and enabled when needed.
  • The SIM is correctly sized and installed for the tracker.

A successful phone test is useful, but it doesn't prove that the SIM will work in the tracker.

Your phone might support additional LTE frequency bands, network features, or automatically configured APN profiles.

Disable the SIM PIN when your model requires it

Some SIM cards request a PIN after installation or restart.

Most compact GPS trackers don't have a keypad or screen for entering that PIN.

If your tracker's instructions require the SIM PIN to be disabled, insert the SIM into a compatible smartphone and use its SIM security settings.

On an iPhone, open Settings, select Cellular, then SIM PIN for the appropriate line.

On Android, the menu varies by manufacturer and software version.

You may need to enter the correct current PIN to disable the lock. Doing so also removes that layer of SIM security.

Never guess your SIM PIN or PUK. If you don't know it, contact the SIM provider. Too many incorrect attempts can lock the card.

Check SMS support

Some GPS trackers use SMS to configure the APN or return diagnostic information.

However, not every data-only or IoT SIM supports ordinary SMS messages.

Ask the provider whether your plan can receive the kind of configuration messages required by your device.

Some IoT SIMs use a provider portal or another messaging arrangement instead of conventional phone-to-device SMS.

Check the tracker hardware

Finally, verify your exact regional version and supported LTE bands.

A European hardware version may not support the bands needed by a carrier in another region.

An APN change cannot fix incompatible LTE hardware.

If you haven't confirmed the SIM and tracker are compatible, do that before attempting further commands.

3. How to Find the Correct APN for Your Carrier

Person checking carrier documentation on a laptop beside a green pet tracker and a mobile phone.
Get the correct APN details from your own carrier or IoT SIM provider.

You don't need to guess the APN.

The best source is the provider that issued your SIM card.

Start with its official support website, customer portal, or IoT connectivity documentation. If you can't find the settings, ask technical support.

What information should you request?

Setting What to confirm
APN Exact access point name
Username Required or blank
Password Required or blank
Authentication Carrier-required method, if configurable
IP type IPv4, IPv6, or another supported configuration
Roaming Whether data roaming must be enabled
SMS service Whether ordinary setup SMS messages are supported

Not every tracker lets you configure every field. Some devices use fixed settings for authentication or IP type.

Follow the options supported by your model.

Why copying another user's APN can cause problems

Two people in the same country may use different mobile operators or SIM plans.

Their APN settings may be different.

For example, an IoT SIM provider may operate through a specialized access point rather than the standard APN used by a consumer smartphone plan.

1NCE is one example of a provider that documents a required APN configuration for its IoT connectivity service.

If you use such a SIM, consult the instructions for your actual service platform and SIM version.

Don't assume that every SIM from the same country—or even every product from the same provider—uses identical settings.

Once you have the correct information, record it before continuing.

4. How to Configure APN on a 4G Pet Tracker

Hands preparing a smartphone beside a green VerdantTrace pet GPS collar during APN setup at home.
Use only the SMS configuration method documented for your exact tracker model.

The exact APN setup method depends on the device.

Some trackers use SMS. Others use an app, web portal, manufacturer configuration tool, or preloaded connectivity profile.

Before sending anything, identify the model and firmware.

Step 1 — Identify your configuration method

Check the device manual for instructions covering:

  • Supported APN configuration method.
  • Exact SMS syntax, if applicable.
  • Required separators and ending characters.
  • Username and password fields.
  • Device restart procedure.
  • Status or information query commands.

The app name alone is not enough to identify the command protocol.

Two trackers using 365GPS may support different SMS commands.

Step 2 — Enter the correct APN

Here are two documented protocol examples. They are not interchangeable.

Protocol reference Example configuration syntax
Supported VerdantTrace VT01 firmware apn,APN_NAME#
Supported VT01 firmware with credentials apn,APN_NAME,USERNAME,PASSWORD#
Separate 908/903-series reference APN#APN_NAME#USERNAME#PASSWORD#

The uppercase names in these examples are placeholders. Replace them with your SIM provider's actual values.

For VT01, use the command format confirmed by your exact manual. If your provider doesn't require a username or password, use the supported no-credentials format. Do not guess whether empty separators need to be retained.

For the 908/903-series reference, the hash-separated protocol is documented separately. Its applicable hardware and firmware must be confirmed before use.

Do not send a 908/903 command to VT01, or a VT01 command to another model, without explicit confirmation from that device's documentation.

If your tracker supports SMS configuration, send the approved command through the messaging method supported by your SIM and device.

Step 3 — Read the response correctly

Depending on the device and firmware, you may receive a message such as:

Success

or:

set ok

That generally means the command was recognized or the setting was saved.

It does not automatically mean:

  • The SIM has established a mobile data connection.
  • The tracker has obtained a new GPS fix.
  • The device has connected to its tracking server.
  • The app has received a fresh location.

Think of APN confirmation as the end of the configuration step—not the end of troubleshooting.

Step 4 — Restart according to the manual

Some devices need to restart after saving APN settings.

Follow your specific model's supported restart procedure.

For example, a separate 908/903 command reference documents SYSRST#. That does not make it a universal restart command for VT01 or other 365GPS devices.

Do not confuse restarting with restoring factory settings.

A factory reset may erase important configuration and make troubleshooting more complicated.

After restarting, verify the connection rather than sending the same APN command repeatedly.

5. How to Verify Your Tracker Is Online

When testing outdoors, check both the new position and the time of the latest update.

Your goal isn't simply to receive an SMS reply.

It's to confirm that the device is communicating with the tracking platform and can provide useful location information.

Four different conditions need to be considered.

Check What it tells you
Network registration The SIM is registered on a supported mobile network
Data connection The tracker has established a usable cellular data connection
Positioning The device can obtain a location under suitable conditions
Platform reporting The server and app have received current device information

These conditions don't necessarily complete in the same order on every tracker.

A device may have a cellular connection before obtaining a satellite fix, for example.

Test the device outdoors

If your manual requires an outdoor positioning test, take the device to an open area with a clear view of the sky.

Avoid testing inside a metal enclosure, basement, or heavily shielded building.

Check your tracker's supported status indicators or diagnostic information.

LED colors and blinking patterns are not universal. Always use the correct model manual to interpret them.

Look at the last update time

Open the app and check when the latest location was received.

A dot on the map does not prove the tracker is currently online.

It might represent an older reported position.

If the device reports new data and the location timestamp updates, you have stronger evidence that communication is working.

If it still says Offline, move to the next section.

6. APN Set Successfully but Tracker Still Offline?

Owner writing a troubleshooting checklist beside a green 4G pet tracker and an unreadable smartphone.
A successful APN reply does not automatically mean the tracker is online.

This is one of the most common reasons owners contact technical support.

The SIM works in a phone, and the tracker has accepted an APN command, but the app remains offline.

At this point, repeating the same command may not help.

Instead, identify which part of the connection chain is failing.

Quick troubleshooting table

What you observe Possible cause Next action
SIM works in phone, not tracker APN, LTE bands, device restrictions Check APN and hardware compatibility
Tracker receives SMS but has no data SMS service works, data session unavailable Check data plan, APN, roaming and status
APN returns set ok, app still offline Settings saved without successful data reporting Check network and platform connection
Another SIM works in the tracker Original SIM plan or carrier compatibility Compare carrier settings and services
Device shows GPRS:OFF Packet-data service unavailable or not established Check the model's status definitions
App shows an old location No new report received Check update time, connectivity and GPS status
Data connection exists, app still offline Server, provisioning or platform issue Collect diagnostics and contact support

These are possible explanations, not automatic diagnoses.

SMS works, but mobile data does not

SMS and mobile data are different services.

A tracker may successfully register on the mobile network and receive a command SMS without establishing a packet-data connection.

This situation can occur with conventional or IoT SIMs, depending on their configuration.

If your tracker supports a status query, check whether the data connection is reported as active.

Some firmware may display a status such as GPRS:OFF, even on devices using newer cellular networks.

Interpret that status using the correct manual, rather than assuming the GPS receiver itself is defective.

Then review the APN, SIM plan, roaming permissions, network compatibility, and carrier restrictions.

SIM works in a phone, but not in the tracker

Smartphones can automatically configure network settings and may support more frequency bands than compact trackers.

Check the following:

  1. Is the APN correct for the SIM's actual plan?
  2. Does the tracker support the carrier's LTE technology?
  3. Do the regional LTE bands match local coverage?
  4. Does the carrier permit the SIM in GPS or IoT equipment?
  5. Can the tracker connect using another known-compatible SIM?

A successful second-SIM test is useful evidence, but it doesn't automatically identify which setting on the first SIM is responsible.

Data connection works, but the platform stays offline

If diagnostics confirm that cellular data is established, consider the next communication step.

The device may be unable to contact the tracking server, or the platform may not recognize its provisioning or account configuration.

Possible issues include server connectivity, firmware configuration, platform availability, and device-account binding.

Don't change server IP addresses, ports, or protocols using commands found for another tracker.

If the modem is connected but the platform isn't receiving data, collect the device's supported diagnostics for the manufacturer.

The app displays an older location

An old position is not always caused by APN settings.

The tracker may have stopped uploading, failed to obtain a fresh satellite fix, or reported a less precise alternative positioning result.

Check the location timestamp and available status information.

If the device is communicating normally but the map remains inaccurate, see our Pet Tracker Wrong Location Troubleshooting Guide.

Example: APN says “set ok,” but 365GPS remains offline

Imagine you have tested your SIM in a smartphone with Wi-Fi disabled. Mobile data works.

You reinstall the card in your compatible VT01, send the documented APN command, and receive set ok.

However, 365GPS continues to show Offline.

The response tells you the configuration step was acknowledged. It does not prove a mobile data connection has been established.

The next step is to check the SIM service, compatibility, and available device diagnostic information.

If everything appears correct but the tracker remains offline, send the relevant information privately to VerdantTrace Support.

There's no reason to keep changing APN values at random.

7. Why Is My GPS Tracker Not Responding to SMS?

Sometimes you don't receive a response to the APN command at all.

That can happen for several reasons.

Check whether the SIM supports the required SMS service

Some data-only SIMs cannot receive normal setup messages from a phone.

Other IoT services offer messaging through their own management portal.

Ask the provider whether your SIM supports the specific SMS functionality required by your tracker.

Check cellular registration

If the device hasn't registered on a compatible network, an SMS may not reach it.

Confirm the SIM is active, the device is powered, the PIN is configured as required, and the regional hardware supports local coverage.

Check the command itself

Look for differences in:

  • Commas and hash separators.
  • Uppercase and lowercase requirements.
  • Blank username or password fields.
  • Required terminating characters.
  • Authorized sender or password requirements, when documented.

Do not assume every command produces a reply. This also varies by firmware.

If you're unsure whether a command was accepted, consult the exact manual instead of repeatedly sending unrelated instructions.

Avoid factory resets, server changes, or password recovery commands unless official support specifically advises them.

8. APN Differences Across Countries, Carriers and IoT SIMs

Green pet GPS tracker and SIM cards on a desk with travel documents and a map, illustrating roaming preparation.
Roaming and APN requirements depend on the SIM service and regional device compatibility.

An APN is tied to a connectivity service—not simply to a country.

A tracker working with one SIM in France, Italy, Germany, or Spain may need a different configuration after switching providers.

International use adds further considerations.

Local carrier SIMs

If you change carriers, obtain the new provider's correct APN.

Don't automatically reuse the old settings.

Also verify the supported LTE bands, mobile data service and SIM restrictions.

IoT SIMs

IoT providers may use specialized APNs and roaming arrangements.

For example, 1NCE documents specific APN, authentication, and IP requirements for its connectivity service.

Those settings belong to that service, not to every IoT SIM on the market.

Ask the IoT provider which APN applies to your account and SIM generation.

Roaming SIMs

Some roaming services retain the same APN across supported countries.

Others have provider-specific requirements.

Before traveling, check whether your service permits roaming in the destination and whether the local partner network supports your tracker's LTE technology.

Regional hardware

A correct APN cannot add missing LTE frequency bands.

A tracker built for one region may be incompatible with important bands in another.

Before using a device abroad, confirm the regional hardware version, local networks, roaming permissions, and service costs.

9. 365GPS and VT01: Follow the Model-Specific Setup Guide

VerdantTrace VT01 uses a compatible user-provided SIM and the 365GPS tracking app.

If your VT01 remains offline, use this model-specific troubleshooting sequence.

Step 1 — Test the SIM. Confirm the SIM has working mobile data. If needed, test another compatible SIM to help isolate a carrier or plan issue.

Step 2 — Verify APN settings. Obtain the correct parameters from the carrier, apply them using your VT01 firmware's approved command format, and restart as instructed.

Step 3 — Check the SIM PIN. Ensure the SIM is configured according to VT01's requirements.

Step 4 — Collect device information. For supported VT01 firmware documented in our setup guide, the device-information SMS query is:

info#

Send it using the method documented for your tracker and SIM.

If the device replies, preserve the information for technical support.

Do not publish the full reply online. It may include identifiers, server settings, or other device details.

If the tracker does not respond, report that too. A missing reply is still useful diagnostic information.

For complete instructions, follow our VT01 4G Pet GPS Tracker Setup and Offline Troubleshooting Guide.

VT01's APN and diagnostic commands are model-specific. Other trackers using 365GPS may require different commands or configuration methods.

If you have another VerdantTrace model, start with Setup & Activation and select the matching device.

10. Final Troubleshooting Checklist: What to Send Support

Hands preparing a tracker support checklist beside a green GPS collar, SIM card, smartphone and laptop.
Record the symptoms and supported diagnostics before contacting technical support.

If the tracker remains offline, you don't need to keep experimenting with settings.

A clear record of the problem can help technical support narrow it down faster.

What should you include in a support request?

Tell the support team:

  • Tracker model and regional version.
  • Country and SIM provider.
  • SIM plan type, such as consumer mobile or IoT.
  • Confirmed APN settings.
  • Whether the tracker receives and replies to SMS.
  • Exact app error and most recent successful connection.
  • Indicator behavior, if documented for the model.
  • Relevant diagnostic information, if available.

Do not post full IMEIs, SIM phone numbers, device passwords, or unredacted diagnostic responses in public comments or community forums.

Still Offline? Get Model-Specific APN Help

If your tracker still won't connect, visit the VerdantTrace Support Center or contact verdanttracepet@gmail.com.

Include the troubleshooting steps you've already completed so the support team can determine whether the next step involves your SIM provider, network compatibility, device configuration, or tracking platform.

The goal is to get reliable new location updates—not simply to make an APN command return a success message.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every 4G pet tracker need manual APN setup?

No. Some trackers obtain APN settings automatically, others require manual configuration, and managed-connectivity devices may arrive preconfigured. The correct process depends on the model, firmware, and cellular service. Check the official setup instructions before changing settings.

Can I set the APN without sending an SMS?

Sometimes. Certain devices allow APN configuration through an app, service portal, or provisioning tool. Others depend on SMS commands. Only use a method documented for your exact model; don't assume a device supports an alternative interface.

Can an incorrect APN affect GPS accuracy?

An incorrect APN does not directly change the satellite-positioning calculation. However, it may prevent the device from uploading new positions. As a result, the app may show an older location that looks inaccurate. Always check when the location was last updated.

Do I need to change APN settings when traveling abroad?

Not necessarily. Some roaming services use one APN across supported countries, while others have different requirements. The correct answer depends on the SIM provider and plan. Check roaming permissions and regional LTE compatibility before traveling.

Can I use a data-only IoT SIM in a GPS tracker?

Yes, if its network and services meet the tracker's requirements. However, a device that relies on ordinary SMS for setup may not be fully configurable with a data-only SIM that lacks the required messaging capability. Verify both data and SMS support before ordering.

What if I don't know my SIM PIN or PUK?

Contact the carrier that issued your SIM. Do not guess or repeatedly enter random codes. Too many incorrect attempts may lock the SIM, and in some cases the carrier may need to replace it.
